Why have I come to COP? To make the case for combined energy security & 1.5 degrees

The CEO's blog 01/12/2023

Dear Energizers,

I believe that all participants in the energy and industrial dynamic need to work together to find practicable solutions to the climate and socio-economic challenges that face us all. We must find a way to balance energy security with the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees.

Energean is a regional energy and sustainability leader, consistently decarbonizing and providing energy security.

We were the first independent E&P to commit to a net-zero target. We have reduced our emissions intensity by 80% since that pledge in 2019, now at 9 kgCO2e/boe, significantly below the sector average of 15. We have won prizes for our sustainability strategy, and we have consistently been rated in the top tier by Sustainalytics, Bloomberg, CDP, and our shares are included in the FTSE4Good index.

How have we achieved this? Through focusing on natural gas and industry-leading operations. Oil is undoubtedly more flexible, profitable, and faster to monetization. However, at Energean, we have never taken the simple and easy path.

Continuing our ESG Leadership: being the “best version of Energean we can be”

The CEO's blog 24/05/2023

Dear Energizers

I’m very proud that our 2022 Sustainability Report (https://www.energean.com/media/5445/energean-sustainability-report-2022-a.pdf)  demonstrates our continued ESG leadership position. ESG and Sustainable Development are at the heart of Energean’s ETHOS belief system and our business model – this is the right way to run a company. We pioneered ESG in the independent E&P space with our landmark Net Zero pledge, and will always continue on this path.

It is important to see that our operations create significant societal value. We deliver secure and reliable energy, we secure jobs, livelihoods and prosperity to people and places that we serve. Through our focus on responsibly produced natural gas, we support sustainable development and the replacement of more pollutive fuels.

This is particularly important in light of the global effects of Russia’s horrific invasion of Ukraine. An already tight global gas market is now stretched to the point that molecular availability and energy security are again major global challenges.

Dear Energizers

Today, I am delighted to announce the launch of Energean’s fourth annual Sustainability Report.

At Energean, ESG and sustainable development are at the heart of everything we do. Our mission is to achieve this in the best possible way, through innovation, improvement, integrity, and holding ourselves to the highest ethical standards in everything we do.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2021

The CEO's blog 03/12/2021

Dear energizers,

Today marks the United Nations’ International Day of Persons with Disabilities (“IDPWD”), an annual celebration of the challenges and opportunities for people around the world who live with disabilities. Since the beginning of 2020, the coronavirus pandemic has caused significant socioeconomic challenges and this year’s IDPWD highlights and recognises that people with disabilities are heavily impacted by these.

At Energean, we have fostered a culture of inclusivity from the day we were born back in 2007 and treat all staff equally regardless of disability. As part of our Ethos, we are continually raising awareness and enabling our staff to gain a better understanding of the challenges that people with disabilities must overcome. I’m very proud of the great work we have done over the past year to expand our activities in this regard, and I expect us to do even more in 2022.

A reflection on COP26

The CEO's blog 15/11/2021

Dear Energizers,

COP26 set the pathway for the “best last chance to keep 1.5 °C alive” and attracted greater global attention than any previous climate change conference, highlighting the urgency with which words and ideas need to be turned into actions. History will eventually determine the success – or otherwise – of the conference, but as business leaders, we need to ask ourselves how the developments in Glasgow impact upon our companies…and keep pushing ourselves to do better; not only to implement current best practice, but to continually develop solutions and improve our actions.

Delivering on our climate change and ESG commitments during a year like no other

The CEO's blog 17/6/2021

Dear Energizers,

Today, I am delighted to announce the launch of Energean’s third annual Sustainability Report, which this year – as promised – has been externally assured by Ernst and Young.

The last 12-months have seen climate change, and wider ESG issues, catapulted to the top of the agenda for governments, communities, investors, and society at large. It has undoubtedly been a difficult year for so many across the globe, yet a great deal of the lessons learned must be remembered: the importance of resolve, resilience and community – and the responsibility that every business has to provide a benefit to society as well as a return to investors. With that in mind, now more than ever, we should abide by our values, the Energean "Ethos".

Restore Our Earth: Earth Day 2021

The CEO's blog 22/4/2021

Dear Energizers,

Energean and the World today celebrate the 51st anniversary of Earth Day, the theme of which is “Restore Our Earth.” A number of special environmental events have happened on Earth Day since its inception on 22 April 1970, including signing of the Paris Agreement at the United Nations in 2016 – the most significant climate accord in history that, at a minimum, aims to keep the increase in global average temperature to below 2°C. Achieving this target will not be easy, but across the world we have seen that the global mindset has shifted from ‘if’ to ‘how’ to make the climate transition happen.

The Greek Revolution: the dawn of our modern world

The CEO's blog 25/3/2021

Dear Energizers

Greece and the World today celebrate and honour the bicentennial of the Greek Revolution, declared on the 25th of March 1821. A historic act that resulted in the establishment of an independent State nine years later, after the London Protocol was signed by England, France and Russia.

What makes the Greek Revolution so special, a real milestone not only for a small country that carries 4,000 years of history, but for the modern world as well?  A first answer is that it was the first national movement ever to succeed in Europe, half a century after the United States Declaration of Independence and almost at the same time as liberation movements in South America occurred.

Greece was part of the Ottoman Empire, a huge state consisting of multiple nations conquered gradually from the beginning of the second millennium AD in East Europe, Asia, Middle East and Africa. This empire was practically the successor of the Byzantine Empire - dominated by the Greeks but definitely not a Greek state. The latter lasted for more than 1,000 years and was the evolution of  the eastern part of the divided Roman Empire.

Speaking with the young, speaking with the future

The CEO's blog 24/11/2020

Dear Energizers,

Last Friday I made a presentation to MSc Students at the University of Piraeus, Greece. (Thank you to Professor Yannis Maniatis, a man who has substantially contributed to the rebirth of the hydrocarbon sector in Greece, for organizing the session).

As well as introducing them to Energean, we discussed issues relating to the energy market, the carbon-free future, and some general lessons I’ve learnt from my business career.

Golden Dawn verdict: a historic moment for Democracy and Justice

The CEO's blog 7/10/2020

Dear Energizers

A historic verdict was passed on October 7th by the Greek Courts on Golden Dawn, the former parliamentary fascist party, it’s leaders, former MPs and party members that where found guilty for a series of assassinations and assaults.

In addition Golden Dawn was indicted as a criminal organization in what I consider to be a huge victory of democracy over fascism, a victory of freedom of speech over fear in a case that has been at the epicentre of politics, public opinion, and media interest for almost eight years.
