Today marks the United Nations’ International Day of Persons with Disabilities (“IDPWD”), an annual celebration of the challenges and opportunities for people around the world who live with disabilities. Since the beginning of 2020, the coronavirus pandemic has caused significant socioeconomic challenges and this year’s IDPWD highlights and recognises that people with disabilities are heavily impacted by these.
At Energean, we have fostered a culture of inclusivity from the day we were born back in 2007 and treat all staff equally regardless of disability. As part of our Ethos, we are continually raising awareness and enabling our staff to gain a better understanding of the challenges that people with disabilities must overcome. I’m very proud of the great work we have done over the past year to expand our activities in this regard, and I expect us to do even more in 2022.
Employee participation is a key part of our community engagement work and our long-standing collaboration with the Kavala Basketball Club’s Wheelchair Basketball team and the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Greece (“MDA Hellas”) is an example of this. MDA Hellas is a non-profit organization doing excellent work to support people who suffer with neuromuscular diseases who we have supported for many years. I had the privilege to take part in the 2021 Athens Classic Marathon with several Energean team members and I want to thank Antigone Karras and Vasso Dimou from MDA Hellas along with Panagiotis and Danae who allowed me to run the 5K alongside them. It was a truly inspirational day for me and one I will remember for a long time.
